Overview

Features

With the playtxt J2ME client you can:
- send and receive instant messages to other playtxt users
- send and receive instant messages to your friends on external IM networks: MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, AIM, Jabber
- set your present location to any of 200,000 towns worldwide and find other playtxt users nearby to chat with.
- take a photo and upload it to your playtxt account
- get profile information and photos of the playtxt people you are talking to

How do I get it?

The playtxt J2ME client can be downloaded by pointing your phone browser at im.playtxt.net/im. The client should run on any MIDP 2 Java enabled phone which can access the internet. We keep a database of phones on which the playtxt client has successfully been run here.
The client comes in two versions. One which allows photo's taken by the phone to be uploaded to the playtxt server and one which does not have this feature. The address given above should automatically return the correct version for your particular phone. If, however, you wish to force one version to be returned you can go to the following addresses:
- The photo version (requires MMAPI compatiable phone): im.playtxt.net/im?t=p
- The non-photo version : im.playtxt.net/im?t=d
IMPORTANT You must ensure your phone settings allow direct connection to the internet for Java applications. We keep a limited list of phone access points used by networks here.

First Run

Test Network

screen shot Initially the client can test your phone to ensure it can connect to the internet and reach the playtxt server. This test can be repeated. If the test fails you will be dropped out to a screen which will allow you to enter your email address which the phone will attempt to send to a playtxt WAP page so we can try to inform you when the playtxt client will run on your phone.

Playtxt Account?

screen shot Next, the client will ask you if you already have a playtxt account. If you have you will be taken to a screen to enter your username and password. Otherwise, you will be taken to a screen which will allow you to create a playtxt account.

Console Screen

Purpose

screen shot The console screen provides status and information about your playtxt session. It also provides a base from which you can change the many settings.

External IM Networks

screen shot If you have accounts on external IM networks, use this menu option to register them with the playtxt server. Once successfully registered you will be automatically logged on to the external IM network when you log onto playtxt from your phone. You can then send and receive IMs on these networks from your phone.

Settings

Network

screen shot Edit the playtxt network settings. You can leave most of these setting with their default values. Changing these settings inappropriately may mean the playtxt IM client may not work.:
- Hostname: the hostname of the playtxt IM server (im.playtxt.net)
- Port: the port number to connect to
- Proxy: whether to use HTTP proxy. The best responsiveness will be obtained by choosing "No" and thus allowing the client to utilze sockets to connect to the playtxt server. However, many phones have broken socket implementations and thus HTTP proxy is the only viable method. Use "Test connection" from the console screen menu to automatically find out what works for your phone.
- Polling: whether when using the HTTP proxy, use it in polling mode. As many phones only allow a single HTTP connection to be made polling is the only viable method. If your phone allows multiple simultaneous HTTP connections then choose "no". Use "Test connection" from the console screen menu to automatically find out what works for your phone.
- Proxy url: the URL of the HTTP playtxt proxy server
- Keep-alive heartbeat: the time in seconds to send an socket keep-alive heartbeat. (only used when proxy is "no".)

Misc

screen shot Edit miscellaneous settings:
- Auto connect: whether to automatically connect to the playtxt server on starting the application
- Sound effects: whether to switch on sound effects
- XMPP Version: playtxt communicates via the open XMPP IM protocol. Specify which version of the protocol to use. You shouldn't need to change this for the playtxt server.
